Fortress Finstergrün
The Fortress, which towers over the north side of the Gstoß summit from the Murvalley by Ramingstein, has a diverse history to it. In the last century, an enormous forest fire raged throughout southern Lungau, and all that was left from the medieval fortress were remains from a tower. In 1900, the Hungarian magnate Count Sándor Szápáry, acquired the ruin and built a new fortress next to it. From here his widow, Margit, Countess of Szápáry, unfolded her beneficial influence on Lungau. Today, the fortress belongs to the Protestant Youth Hostel. www.burg-finstergruen.at

Mauterndorf Fortress
In the 13th century, the Mauterndorf Fortress, a former toll station and summer residence to the sovereign Archbishop of Salzburg, brought life into the Middle Ages. An absorbing tour through the fortress grounds with your own audio-guide (German, English, and Italian), lots of fun at the knight’s playground, a hearty knight’s snack at the fortress’s pub and a walk through the Lungau Regional Museum complete the visit and make it an unforgettable experience.
