CULTURE AND TRADITION The “Prangstangen” procession of metre-high flower decorated poles is a specialty of the towns of Zederhaus and Muhr in Lungau. Only single young men have the honour of carrying these heavy poles. It isn’t enough to be unmarried – a Prangenstangen carrier should also not be paying child-support! The preparations begin in the first weeks of June. Up to 50,000 flowers (daisies, gentians, peonies, wild carnations) are gathered and bound into flower garlands. It's an overwhelming display to watch the powerful oversized figures being paraded through the town streets. Samson - a biblical hero and the symbolic figure of Lungau - originated in the 16th century and even today exemplifies power and strength! The "Samson Bearer" truly has to accomplish a show of strength - his shoulders have to bear a 6 - 8 metre high figure, weighing over 60 kg - by means of an inner framework, skilfully balancing the figure as he walks. Fall festival Lungau nature presents its colourful side during the autumn season. A beautiful time for extended walks in the Lungau mountain region including a hearty snack in one of the many original mountain cabins. Enjoy a “Lungauer Schöpsenes” - roast lamb at one of our inns or relax in a Lungau hay bath. The Lungau cultural association organizes cultural events and projects throughout the whole year on various themes. This year the emphasis is on the summer program; the Cultural Festival in June, a theatre production in July as well as a row of concerts in St. Leonhard, and a workshop for kids and an “open-air” event in August. All this promises to make it an attractive and stimulating anniversary program. Lungauer Event Calendar |
